Chang Ling's thirty-year artistic journey is presented; solo exhibition "If Homeland" opens at Yi Yun Art Gallery
The solo exhibition "If Homeland — Chang Ling" will be held at Yiyun Art's Qingtian branch from May 16 to June 20, 2026. This marks the first official solo exhibition launched in the gallery space since Yiyun Art began representing artist Chang Ling in October 2024, making it a significant milestone for both the gallery and the artist.
Chang Ling's conceptualization for this solo exhibition's presentation differs from his earlier arrangements, which primarily featured individual paintings. Instead, it continues the approach seen in his 2023 solo exhibition "Pre-War Preparations" at MOCA Taipei, or even tracing back to a corner of his 2019 solo exhibition "Grand Profound Society — Everyday History" at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, where the entire exhibition space is regarded as an extension of the artist's subjectivity. Thus, every piece in the exhibition, both substantively and symbolically, should be seen as a manifestation of Chang Ling's rapidly flashing "thoughts" during his creative process. This exhibition simultaneously presents sub-themes such as "Pork Belly," "Grand Profound Society," "Shapes of the Great Mass," "Pseudo-Arrogance," "On the Brink of Utopia," and "If Homeland." Because they are "assembled" here and no longer separated by archival classification, the diversity of the artist's subjectivity, the continuity of his experiences and time, and his relationship with his works become more clearly apparent in the development of Chang Ling's creative career. This allows for a deeper exploration of the images, offering a comprehensive view of the artist, his life, experiences, thoughts, and his entire body of work.

The title "If Homeland" stems from Chang Ling's inquiry into "the abstract nature of homeland." He states, "Homeland is too abstract; its abstractness lies in the reorganization of memories and the addition of new elements, which are then distorted in this process of addition. Or, the added elements aren't truly mine, but rather tastes, sounds, and images instilled by collective consciousness—hence the presence of the word 'if'." Using this question as a starting point, he observes the phenomenon of how information acquisition and experiential perception mutually generate and re-disseminate in contemporary human experience.
As daily life, social atmospheres, and international situations shift, an deluge of information incessantly permeates people's minds and bodies, constantly altering how we've traditionally understood the world. In this process, people find themselves in a state that is both secure and anxious—it seems we see the world more clearly than ever before, yet it's also harder than ever to discern our own place within it.

Yiyun Art hopes that the "If Homeland" exhibition will serve as a catalyst to present Chang Ling's creative accumulation of over thirty years to the audience in a more comprehensive manner. As Chang Ling stated in a recent interview: "But unconsciously, it (the accumulated painting concepts) will present a diversity centered on me. This diversity, on some level, should be more capable of expressing the various facets and journeys of an artist regarding the issues of creative subjectivity, rather than repeatedly presenting only one aspect. If one keeps presenting only one aspect, it's like a spotlight shining on the artist, and you can only see the right half of his face, not his full self."

Born in Hualien, Taiwan in 1975, Chang Ling received a D.N.S.A.P master's degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2004 and joined the "Hantoo Art Group" in Taipei in 2006. Chang Ling's recent solo exhibitions include "Pre-War Preparations" at MOCA Taipei in 2023, "Flowers Bloom in a Moment Where Time Does Not Exist" at Don Gallery, Shanghai in 2022, and "The Grand Profound Society — Everyday History" at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 2019, among others. Recent group exhibitions include "Memory of an Era — Selected Works from the Collection" at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Chang Ling's latest series of works is titled "If Homeland." The abstraction of "homeland" is not a static geographical coordinate, but an organ continuously transforming at the boundaries of consciousness, breathing time and absorbing emotions. After being constantly fed with overwhelming information and images, such a homeland no longer belongs to the individual; instead, it is shaped by society, technology, and collective memory. Within this, flashes of déjà vu make us question the reality of the past, while prophecies make people wonder if the future has already been written. Chang Ling invites viewers to immerse themselves in this "Island of Dual Illusions" that simultaneously embraces the past and foreshadows the future, seeking traces of vitality that still exist in an age of over-stimulation.
